TOP 20 SHOWDOWN
|
Top 20 Showdown |
During
the Duel In The Desert in Las Vegas, Nevada one of the most exciting
events of the WWMT will be held during this weekend. The top 20 in
the WWMT will put on a 20 lap showdown during the Duel In The
Desert. Also there will be 2 more drivers that qualify from the
CSP/WWMT Vegas Challenge. There is little time for patience and
strategy. Drivers need to go all out, get to the front and collect
the win. This year 22 drivers will be in the WWMT Top 20 Showdown.
|
How Will It Be Determined |
The
top 20 in the WWMT will be locked into the showdown and 2 other
drivers from the CSP/WWMT Vegas Challenge will be added.

Stats |
|
Last Year |
The
third year was a charm as Ricky Alvarado tried for the past two
years to win the Top 20 Showdown and would win in his third try at
the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Nevada during the twelfth
annual IMCA Duel in the Desert. Justen Yeager and Jeep Berry took
the wins the past two years. The 2009 WWMT Top 20 Showdown was a
little different than years past as the Top 20 in the Northern
Series would just have their own shootout but this year they added
the Southern Series. That made the race harder to make because only
10 drivers from both series would compete together. Ricky Alvarado
made both series top 20 in points so he had two chances to qualify
through the heats. The top five finishers in each heat race advanced
to the showdown. Ricky Alvarado dominated the event from his sixth
starting spot in the showdown after winning his heat on Friday
night. Lance Mari took the lead early in the race but Alvarado found
away around Mari. Lance then had to hold off a hard charging Paul
Stone for second but Stone got around Mari in the end. Alvarado had
extended his lead before Stone could charge him down. Bill Meyer,
Dan Fitzgerald, and Sonny Wahl qualified but did not start in the
showdown. Northern Series heat one winner, Harvey Howard pulled off
the track early. Later on Justen Yeager and Zane DeVilbiss had
pulled their rides into the infield. Troy McElroy then was seen
turned around in turn two with five laps left but no caution came
out. Mari, Tyrone Yazzie, and Jimmy Reeves rounded out the top five.
Thursday night heat races seen Harvey Howard and Clay Daly take the
checkers and transferring to the Showdown. Howard held off Troy
McElroy, Don Baisch, Justen Yeager, and Mickey Stubbings for the
win. Chase Hansen would finish sixth after starting from the pole
due to a bad battery. Two-time WWMT Northern Series feature winner
Aaron Spangler also did not make it through. As well as Idaho
drivers, Kelly Shaw, Jason and Jake Donnelly. Clay Daly won the
Southern Series heat over Tyrone Yazzie, Joshua Vogt, Sonny Wahl,
and Bill Meyer. 2009 WWMT feature winner at Mohave, Tim Ward missed
the transfer by one spot. Jay Foster, Keith Smith, Joe Parmeley, and
John Uccelini did not make it through as well. Friday night heat
races seen Two time WWMT Northern Series champion, Ricky Alvarado
and 2009 WWMT Southern Series champion Paul Stone take the
victories. Ricky would beat Zane DeVilbiss who started in the last
row. Along with Ricky and Zane, Brad Boyer, Richard Anderson, and
Robert Gallegos transferred. Gallegos blew a motor the next day so
he ran the Chase Hansen machine in the Showdown. Missing the
transfer by one was Shawn Reed. Colten Vanderherp had a flat so he
was unable to transfer. Jeff Cooper, Dennis Durmas, and Troy Sweeten
III did not make it as well. Paul Stone won the WWMT Southern Series
heat race number two. By doing that he had to beat Phil Penney, Dan
Fitzgerald, Lance Mari, and Jimmy Reeves who also made the showdown.
Shane Jones who was the WWMT South contingency points champion
finished sixth. Harry Anderson, Duane Rogers, Ricky Alvarado (won
the heat race for the North), and Jeffry Sheppard Jr. did not make
it in the showdown. Sixth place in each heat race ended up taking
3000 watt generators home from Wild West Modified Tour Southern
Series title sponsor.
