HUNTER, YEAGER WIN FEATURES, BEECH IS EQ WILD WEST TOUR CHAMP

ROCK SPRINGS, Wyoming (September 12 & 13, 2014)-
By: IMCA.com– Jeff Hunter and Justen Yeager won the battles while Bert Beech won the war, when the EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour concluded with Friday and Saturday features at Sweetwater Speedway.

Hunter and Yeager were $1,000 winners in main events for touring IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds. Beech ran third both nights at Rock Springs to capture the series championship, his first with IMCA.

“We made all the features this year and the car was real good the last three weekends,” said Beech, who caught Chase Hansen in the race for the crown. “We’ve been following the tour for about five years so it feels pretty good to win it.”

Hunter’s win on opening night came in his career 14th Wild West Tour outing. He started the 30-lapper from sixth, was in front by lap five and stayed there ‘til midway.

He’d get the lead back late and beat travel partner Eddie Belec across the stripe. Beech, Tony Steward and Jake Donnelly completed the top five.

“I bought Eddie’s Race car from last year and have had a great season. This was my second win and we’ve had a lot of top five’s in 27 races,” Hunter said. “I’m psyched because I made the Fast Shafts All-Star ballot. Eddie can’t have his old car back.”

Yeager was much less pleased with his opening night showing.

After being part of a first-lap scuffle, he drove back to the front and got caught up with leader Michael Hale in the late going.

“That was 100 percent my doing,” he said. “It was one of my worst nights ever racing. I wasn’t too happy with myself. It was one of those race nights I’d just as soon forget.”

He made his way up from ninth starting the next night and ran side-by-side or bumper-to-bumper with Belec much of the way.

Belec got turned around late and wound up sixth. Travis Metz, Beech, Chris Clark and Rick Fierro all got by to fill out the top five.

Yeager’s Saturday win was his fourth this season on the tour and career 18th.

HALE HAULS FROM BACK TO WIN EQ WWMT RACE IN ATOMIC

ATOMIC CITY, Idaho (August 24, 2014)-
By: IMCA.com– Michael Hale was quick to credit the track crew at Atomic Motor Raceway with an assist following his Saturday night EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour victory.

The Friday night event for traveling IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds had been lost to rain, which left flooded track and pit conditions in its wake.

A long day of work made the 1/3-mile dirt oval raceable, however. The chief beneficiary of those efforts was Hale, who restarted at the back after exiting early in the 30-lapper to fix a broken tie rod.

Fastest down the backstretch, he quickly worked his way toward the front to challenge leader Tony Steward, taking the lead and bringing the 20th starting Casey Delp along into second near midway.

“The car worked really well coming out of (turn) two,” Hale said of his career third Wild West Tour checkers. “It was a fun race and I appreciate how much work went into getting the track ready. I’m glad they were able to get it in.”

The victory paid $1,000 and put Hale on the ballot for the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational. He pulled away from Delp as the race wound down. Steward, Chase Hansen and Bryan Wordelman rounded out the top five.

The 2014 EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour ends with a Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12-13 doubleheader at Sweetwater Speedway in Rock Springs, Wyo.

BEECH GETS FIRST WIN, HANSEN SCORES AGAIN IN EQ WWMT IN ELY!

ELY, Nevada (July 25 & 26, 2014)-
By: IMCA.com– Bert Beech started 35 EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour features before getting his first win Friday at Great Basin Raceway.

The next night at Ely, Chase Hansen got his second IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified series victory in three starts after going without a win in his first 92 tour outings.

Both features paid $1,000 and put Beech and Hansen on the ballot for the 2015 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational.

Beech took the initial green from third on opening night and chased front row starters Don Baisch and Rick Fierro early on.

Timely cautions minimized the time those three spent running with slower traffic. Beech took the lead on lap 13 following a restart and led the last 17 circuits, holding off Dan Fitzgerald for the checkers.

“We’ve been chasing the tour the last four or five years and I’ve led some laps but never the most important one, so this was a really special win,” said Beech. “The fans there in Ely are awesome. We hung out with them and the other drivers at the track after the race. It was a good time.”

Bryan Wordelman, Chris Clark and Fierro completed the top five. Baisch saw his strong run end with mechanical woes.

Hansen got the opportunity to hone his victory lane interview skills after starting sixth in Saturday’s 30-lapper.

He was quickly up to third, then snuck around Baisch and Fierro when the front-running pair got together on lap 20.

Beech pressured but Hansen was faster in the turns and won by a car length. Fierro, Wordelman and Fitzgerald were third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

“We made some pretty drastic setup changes from Friday,” said Hansen, who had finished sixth on opening night. “The track stayed pretty heavy but I finally got the car to turn for me.”

DELP, HANSEN EARN FIRST EQ WILD WEST TOUR FEATURE WINS

VERNAL, Utah (June 27 & 28, 2014)-
By: IMCA.com– Two veterans of the EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour made long-awaited stops in victory lane when the series for IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds visited Diamond Mountain Speedway.

Casey Delp won his first tour feature on Friday at Vernal. Chase Hansen accomplished the same feat on Saturday, also earning $1,000 and joining Delp as a new candidate on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot.

Point leader Justen Yeager came into the series weekend with a three-race winning streak and ran second both nights.

Michael Hale, Jake Donnelly and Eddie Belec completed Friday’s top five. Belec,
Jeff Hunter and Bert Beech ended third, fourth and fifth, respectively, on Saturday.

Delp counted three runner-up showings in 36 career Wild West Tour starts coming into the weekend. He started sixth in Friday’s 30-lapper, took the lead from Hale on the 14th circuit and held off three-time series champion Yeager for the checkers.

Yeager peeked inside as the front pair ran in lapped traffic the final four circuits.

“I went checkers or wreckers going into turn three on the last lap,” Delp said. “I knew Justen was right there and I wasn’t going to give it to him that easily.”

“This win has been a long time coming. We’ve always been right there so it was due time. I’m pretty happy,” added Delp, who has yet to finish outside the top seven in six WWMT starts this year. “This 2011 Victory still has a little speed in it. It’s the most consistent car I’ve ever had.”

Hansen is the iron man of the Wild West Tour. He’s entered all 93 series events, qualified for 81 of the features and had half a dozen second-place finishes before racing to career win number one.

After swapping the lead early on with Belec, he moved to a higher line and led all the way to the night two checkers

“It was a huge relief to finally win. It’s been a long time to finally get it,” Hansen admitted, “and it gives us a lot more confidence that we can win again.”

The next EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour doubleheader is Friday and Saturday, July 25 and 26 at Great Basin Raceway in Ely, Nev.

Feature Results

June 27 – 1. Casey Delp; 2. Justen Yeager; 3. Michael Hale; 4. Jake Donnelly; 5. Eddie Belec; 6. Chase Hansen; 7. Brian Ungaro; 8. Rick Fierro; 9. Bert Beech; 10. Jeff Hunter; 11. Zane DeVilbiss; 12. YEAGER SWEEPS THE WEEKEND AT SWEETWATER SPEEDWAY!

ROCK SPRINGS, Wyoming (May 30 & 31, 2014)-
By: IMCA.com – He’s always been consistent, but it’s been a while since Justen Yeager put together an EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour winning streak.

He’s hoping the current trend continues.

Yeager swept IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified series events at Sweetwater Speedway, earning $1,000 for each of his Friday, May 30 and Saturday, May 31 victories.

“It’s always good to win at home,” said the three-time tour champion, who took the opening night checkers ahead of Eddie Belec and Jeremy Frenier, then topped the Saturday show ahead of Belec and Jeff Hunter. “It was nice to have those Colorado guys come up here. They’re all really good drivers and it’s fun to race with them.”

After starting 12th on Friday, Yeager used higher and lower lines to catch up with Jeremy Frenier. He moved to the middle groove to pass for the lead on the ninth of 30 circuits.

“You could race every inch of that track,” said Yeager, pressured by Belec and Frenier while the three ran with lapped traffic late in the contest.

Better luck with the draw put him inside row two for the initial start on Saturday. Yeager caught Bert Beech for the lead on the second lap.

He found himself eyeball to eyeball with Hunter following a restart with six to go, then pulled ahead to win by three car lengths.

“The track was awesome again,” he said. “You could race all over that thing.”

Yeager also won three straight series races in 2008 and 2009. He last won both weekend events at the same track in 2011 during a successful visit to Fairgrounds Speedway.

Casey Delp and Hunter completed Friday’s top five. David Karst was fourth and Delp ran fifth on Saturday.

Already on the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot, Yeager was the hard charger on Friday. Those honors went Saturday to Tim Dower, who finished 10th after starting 23rd.

Next on the EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour schedule is the June 27-28 doubleheader at Diamond Mountain Speedway in Vernal, Utah.

Feature Results

May 30 – 1. Justen Yeager; 2. Eddie Belec; 3. Jeremy Frenier; 4. Casey Delp; 5. Jeff Hunter; 6. Kevin Wright; 7. Jake Donnelly; 8. Bert Beech; 9. Michael Hale; 10. Chase Hansen; 11. Jesse Taylor; 12. DONNELLY WINS FIRST, YEAGER WINS FIFTEENTH WWMT FEATURE AT MCR!

DELTA, Utah (May 2 & 3, 2014)-
By: IMCA.com – A first-time winner and a regular visitor to victory lane prevailed when the EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour opened at Millard County Raceway.

Jake Donnelly regained the lead from Justen Yeager and took the IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified checkers for his career first tour triumph on Friday.

Yeager, a three-time series champion, battled Casey Delp and Randy Artz en route to the front, then captured his 15th career WWMT win ahead of Michael Hale on Saturday.

Both 30-lap features paid $1,000 to win. Donnelly is new to the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot while Yeager was already vote eligible.

The high line took Donnelly to the front twice. He used the top to pass Bryan Wordelman for the lead on the first lap, then built up a big lead before becoming mired in lapped traffic.

Yeager caught up and passed Donnelly before the pair came up on a lapped car late in the race. Yeager went low while Donnelly found better grip higher up on the oval and shot back ahead.

He beat Yeager to the stripe by a couple car lengths. Hale, Wordelman and Bert Beech completed the top five.

“We’ve been following the tour for five years. This has been a long time coming,” said Donnelly. “I thought we’d probably win one this year but I was surprised to win on opening night.”

“It was a great weekend. We couldn’t have asked for more,” he added. “Everything worked out perfectly for us.”

“Jake had the fast car. He earned it,” said Yeager. “It was a good race and I was glad to see him win.”

Donnelly’s victory came in his 33rd career series start. His best finish prior to Friday had been second, last July at Diamond Mountain Speedway.

Yeager picked up IMCA career win number 131 on Saturday.

He’d started eighth and worked his way up to duel with Delp and Artz. Delp’s pass for the lead was negated by caution before Yeager made his move to the front following a restart with nine circuits left.

Another yellow waved with four to go. Hale tried to contend but ran out of laps and settled for second. Donnelly, Artz and Brian Ungaro finished third through fifth, respectively.

“We had an awesome track on Saturday,” said Yeager, much impressed with the new banking. “It was just a great, great track to race on.”

The tour is at Sweetwater Speedway in Rock Springs, Wyo., for Friday and Saturday, May 30 and 31 shows.
